Spring Hill Chargers

08/07/2013 - SilverStreaks, Chargers meet Saturday in playback

Farming- Spring Hill and New Munich will decide which team will be going to the State Class C Amateur Baseball Playoffs when they meet Saturday, Aug. 10, in Region 15C playback at Farming. Both are currently 1-1 in the regional playoffs. Spring Hill opened the tournament with a 10-4 over St. Martin Saturday, Aug. 3 in the afternoon. They fell 6-4 to Lake Henry Saturday in a night game at St. Martin. The SilverStreaks fell 3-1 to Richmond Saturday at Farming, but posted a 2-0 win over Regal on Sunday, Aug. 4. The Aug. 10 game is expected to be a good one and well attended. “We know them pretty good,” said SilverStreak manager Paul Sand. “It will come down to a play that goes this way or that way.” Charger manager Randy Schoenberg agreed the game could be very close. “I am sure it will come down to a run here or there,” said Schoenberg. “I wouldn’t expect anything else with them.” The two teams have met three times this year. New Munich won the first game 1-0 and the second 8-2. Spring Hill won the third meeting 2-1.

Spring Hill 10, St. Martin 4 Farming-“ They are taking good cuts and are putting bats on the ball,” said Schoenberg after the Chargers defeated St. Martin on Saturday with a 12 hit attack. “Not all the hits are home runs, but they are getting on base.”

The Chargers had only one extra base hit in the win. Cody Eichers, who was 2-for-3, doubled in the fourth inning. That double came as part of a four-run rally and gave Spring Hill a 6-3 lead in the game. The win was part of a three-game win streak the Chargers put together in the post season.

“We finally stopped panicking and are just going about business and having fun,” said Jamie Terres. Terres singled and scored as part of Spring Hill’s four-run seventh inning. That inning pretty much clinched the win for the Chargers.

“The pitching is doing its job and we are starting to play well,” Terres added.

The Chargers’ offensive production came from throughout the line-up. Against St. Martin the rallies were either started by or sustained by the bottom part of the batting order.

“They are carrying us now,” said Schoenberg. “It is unbelievable.

Lake Henry 6, Spring Hill 4 St. Martin - The Chargers and Lake Henry Lakers played 10-innings before the game was decided. The win guarantees Lake Henry a berth in the State Tournament later this month.

“It was a real back and forth game,” said Schoenberg. “First one would take the lead, then the other.”

Spring Hill rallied in the fifth inning to take the lead with Jamie Terres and Eichers having singles that inning. Terres and Shawn Schoenberg, who walked, scored. The lead lasted less than an inning as Lake Henry’s Josh Kampsen hit a two-run home run. They extended the lead to 4-2 on an RBI single by Cory Nietfeld in the eighth inning. Terres and Schoenberg again scored in the ninth inning as Schoenberg doubled and Eichers singled to tie the game. Singles by Jon Lieser and Kampsen, and a double by Nietfeld gave the Lakers two more in the 10th inning. Kyle Bertram doubled in the tenth, but the other batters were retired to end the game. Neither starter was on the mound in the 10th inning. Corey Schoenberg was charged with the loss and Nathan Meyer earned the win. The win qualifies Lake Henry as one of the four Region 15C teams that will be going to state.
