08/04/2014 - Area sports roundup: Chargers win 2, clinch state trip

ELROSA – Spring Hill clinched a Class C state tournament berth with a 4-2 win against New Munich in Region 15C amateaur baseball action Saturday night.

 

Nathan Terres went 2-for-4 with all four RBI for the Chargers, who won twice Saturday. Terres hit a three-run double with two outs in the third inning with Spring Hill down 2-0.

 

Cody Eichers added two hits for Spring Hill (15-1), which faces the Lake Henry/St. Martin winner at 7:30 p.m. Friday in Elrosa.

 

Jordan Welle relieved Chargers starter Louie Opatz in the first inning and went 6 2/3innings for the win, allowing two hits.

 

Joe Stangler was 2-for-5 with two RBI for the Silverstreaks (10-7), who play the Richmond/Norway Lake-Sunburg winner for a state berth at 1:30 p.m. Saturday in Elrosa.

 

 

Spring Hill 3, Richmond 2

 

ELROSA – Louie Opatz’s sacrifice fly drove in Shawn Schoenberg in the bottom of the ninth to lift Spring Hill over Richmond Saturday afternoon.

 

Opatz finished 2-for-3 with an RBI and Ethan Vogt, a draftee from Elrosa, got the complete-game victory despite allowing 10 hits.

 

The Royals jumped on Vogt with eight hits in the first four innings, but got just two runs across.

 

Adam Backes, Cole Schmitz, Scott Ruegemer and Dusty Adams all finished with two hits apiece for Richmond (9-7), but Vogt settled down and held Richmond hitless until the ninth inning.

 

Trailing 2-0 in the eighth inning, the Chargers rallied for two runs off Royals starter Ben Schroeder.

 

Schroeder had a no-hitter going into the sixth inning and allowed four hits through eight. Scott Schroeder took over in the ninth inning and took the loss.
